What is MSBR? Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MSBR) was developed at the University of Massachusetts Medical School in the 1970's. It is currently being employed in a wide variety of settings to help people who are experiencing chronic pain, stress-related conditions, anxiety disorders and depression. It can help people with chronic conditions such as MS who can experience any or all of these symptoms. It can also help healthy individuals improve performance, increase self-compassion and better tolerate the day to day stresses of normal life.
MSBR is an 8 week long program that teaches mindfulness meditation techniques combined with some gentle yoga stretches, body scan exercises and careful observation of mundane activities of daily living to help develop awareness of present moment experience with a compassionate, non-judgemental stance.
MSBR practice can lead to improved self-awareness, increases in coping skills, patience and better distress tolerance. It can enhance the immune systems' ability to respond to distress, reducing the body's level of perceived pain and stress.
