Depression and Diabetes
  • People with diabetes are almost twice as likely to develop depression than those who do not have a chronic condition
  • The major factors that contribute to depression are your genes, the amount of stress in your life, and how you think about yourself and your future
  • Effective treatment for depression can help you to feel better, have more energy, have better concentration and have greater interest and motivation to take care of your diabetes and live happier
  • Depression is unlikely to go away by itself
  • You don't have depression because you are weak or haven't tried hard enough
  • As a first step, speak with your healthcare provider
  • Antidepressants can help but they are not for everybody
  • Psychotherapy can help.  There are many forms of counseling and one that will be effective for you.
  • Good sleep and regular exercise are two of the best antidepressants
